My personal website is always a study; this time, in WordPress. Previously, we did Joomla. As such, I’ll try to reply to comments and keep this timely, but your mileage may vary.
I am an Internet entrepreneur with over sixteen years’ experience in Internet and Web technologies, including website design, system administration, and business plan/project development for e-commerce and SaaS applications.
I am a programmer by trade and training, and am well versed in many popular web technologies. I got my start in the greatest of all programming languages, Perl, on A/UX 3.0. I did have the last set of manuals from Apple Austin as they shut that down, and I also had what they told me were the last A/UX 3.0 and 3.1 discs.
Since then, I’ve done many things — Android apps in Java, Facebook apps in PHP, websites in PHP and Perl, scientific programming in Fortran, OS development in C, simulator development in C++, more websites in PHP and Perl — but the most common tool in my toolkit is PHP. I tend to go for Linux, Apache, and MySQL to round-out my LAMP stack. I’m a fan of CentOS, although I have used Debian lately and found it to be particularly well suited for some jobs with mod_perl. I’ve given up the religious views on operating systems, or languages, or other technical orthodoxies — you have to be willing to pick the right tool for the job, as things change too fast in business to cater to your particular prejudices. I’ve done work recently in VB.NET targeting .NET framework 3.0 and found it to be great for what I needed — so you just never know.
I have recently been managing a remote team of developers. That has its own unique set of challenges, but, when things are humming, things are humming. I’ve learned a lot about project management, people management, and how to make a good ticketing system work for you rather than against you.
